The Georgia Department of Corrections will be conducting its Operation Safeguard training exercise during the week of June 15-19, 2009. Conducted on an annual basis, Operation Safeguard is an exercise of the Department's response to crisis management conditions involving a variety of incidents, including natural and man-made disasters, such as hurricanes, floods and terrorist attacks.
While personnel will be involved at every level internally, it is important to note that the Department's day-to-day operations and focus on effective offender management will not be disrupted or compromised. This drill will provide an opportunity for staff to train in a simulated crisis environment, while at the same time, assessing the effectiveness of current policies and procedures.
However, to preclude misunderstanding or false alarms within the field over what is exercise and what is real world, all exercise-related communications, be they in person, telephonic or written, will be preceded and followed by the statement Exercise-Operation Safeguard-Exercise.
