Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
**MORE THAN 555 CIVILIANS AND 97 STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED TO DATE FOR ATTEMPTING TO INTRODUCE CONTRABAND INTO GDC FACILITIES.**
1) On January 16, 2013, Augusta State Medical Prison staff conducted a shakedown on staff entering the prison. K-9s were alerted to Melissa Brown's vehicle and receipts for purchased contraband were found. During questioning, she admitted to bringing contraband ($450 of tobacco and cell phones) into the facility. Brown was arrested by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
2) On January 17, 2013, staff at Johnson State Prison were alerted that Correctional Officer Corey Taylor was planning to deliver contraband to an inmate. A search of Taylor's vehicle found 12 packs of tobacco, two rolls of electrical tape and two money cards. Upon questioning, Taylor admitted to purchasing the contraband for the inmate and was arrested by Johnson County Sheriff's Department.
3) On January 20, 2013, Smith State Prison visitor Wesley Mason was noticed placing items into a candy bag during visitation. Staff confiscated the bag and found it contained 40 small balloons of marijuana and four small balloons of rolling papers. Mason was arrested by the Glennville Police Department.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
