Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
1- On Thursday, April 7, 2011, Freddie Ricky Ledford was arrested at Telfair State Prison in Helena. Ledford was on prison property and began running when officers spotted him. Officers searched the area where Ledford was originally seen and found 24 cell phones, 22 phone chargers, 71 packs of rolling paper, marijuana, tobacco, cigars and cigarette lighters. Candace Garner was also arrested. She told authorities Ledford paid her to bring him to the prison. Authorities found marijuana in her possession. The White County Sheriff's Office assisted.
2- On Saturday, April 9, 2011, Dewayne Allen James Jr. and Chase Matthew Hynson were arrested at Calhoun State Prison in Morgan. When questioned by authorities, they admitted dropping Jacob T. Bates off behind the prison, so he could throw a bag containing contraband over the fence. The bag was discovered and contained 26 cell phones with chargers, 89 lighters, cigarettes, electrical zip ties, flashlight, clawhammer, wire cutters and screw drivers. Bates was not with James and Hynson when they spoke to authorities and he was later arrested on Sunday, April 10, 2011. The Calhoun County Sheriff's Department assisted.
3- On Saturday, April 9, 2011, Mary Griffin was arrested at Calhoun State Prison in Morgan. She was at the facility visiting her son when she went inside a visitors restroom and left balloons of marijuana and tobacco. During a search of her son's property, officers found a cell phone and marijuana. Both admitted Mary Griffin brought the contraband into the prison. The Calhoun County Sheriff's Department assisted
