More than 50 Graduate at Smith State Prison
GED and Vocational certifications
FORSYTH, Ga. –More than 50 offenders, in both GED and vocational programs, were honored on March 18 at a graduation ceremony hosted by Smith State Prison in Glennville, Ga. A total of 18 offenders received a GED, 12 received certification in Georgia Beekeeping, seven received an Industrial Maintenance certification, and 10 received a Horticulture Participation certification.
“I cannot say this enough, educational and vocational programming for our offenders is key to their success when they are released,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Thank you to the University of Georgia, Young Harris College, and Central Georgia Technical College. It is through our partnerships, that we are afforded the ability to provide these men with college credits and certification; and for that I thank you.”
Not only were these graduates honored during the ceremony, but they also were able to share this moment with their families. The offenders had the chance to invite their family members to the ceremony and had the opportunity to share the reward of their hard work to learn and gain knowledge in these programs.
The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
