New Warden Named at Wilcox State Prison - Darrell Hart Assigned

Forsyth - Commissioner Brian Owens announced the assignment of Darrell Hart as Warden of Wilcox State Prison effective July 1, 2012. The facility is located in Abbeville, Georgia. As Warden, Hart will be responsible for overseeing 257 staff members and 1862 medium security male offenders.

"The Department looks forward to Hart’s new leadership role at Wilcox State Prison," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "His leadership and experience will be a great benefit to the staff and offenders," added Owens.

Hart began his career with the Department in 1988 at Valdosta State Prison. Early in his career, he served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Chief of Security and Unit Manager. In 1996, he was promoted to Superintendent at the Thomasville Diversion Center. Hart was transferred in 1999 and served as Warden at Homerville State Prison. In 2005, he transferred back to Valdosta State Prison and served as Warden. Hart most recently served as Warden at Ware State Prison in Waycross, Georgia. He received a certificate in Criminal Justice from Columbus State University and has completed Basic Management Training and Corrections Leadership Institute. He is a 30 year veteran of the Georgia National Guard.

The Department of Corrections is the fourth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
