New Deputy Director of Probation Operations Named

Forsyth - Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Mike Kraft as Deputy Director of Probation Operations effective January 16, 2012. In this capacity, Kraft will assist the Director of Probation Operations in overseeing the Department’s probation officers and more than 150,000 state probationers. Kraft most recently held the position of Field Operations Manager for Probation Operations Northeast Region.

"Mike has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the Department 22 years ago," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "His experience will serve him well in this position and our Probation Operations will continue to benefit from his knowledge and expertise," added Owens.

Kraft began his career with the Department of Corrections in 1990 as a Probation Officer in the Central DeKalb Probation Office. He has since served as Probation Officer II, Intensive Probation Officer, Specialized Probation Officer and Probation Officer III. Kraft went on to served as Chief Probation Officer in the Alcovy and Western Judicial Circuits.

Kraft received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Georgia and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College. He is also a POST certified instructor and firearms instructor.

The Department of Corrections is the fourth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
