Forsyth – Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Donald Barrow as Warden of Washington State Prison effective July 1, 2011. The facility is located in Davisboro and houses Close Security male offenders. As Warden, Barrow will be responsible for overseeing 287 staff members and 1,533 inmates.
“Warden Barrow has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the Department 25 years ago,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “Everyone at Washington State Prison will greatly benefit from his experience and leadership,” added Owens.
Barrow joined the Department in 1986 as a Correctional Officer at Georgia State Prison. He has also served as Canine Handler, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Chief of Security and Deputy Warden of Security. He was first promoted to Warden in 1999 at Valdosta State Prison and most recently served as Warden at Telfair State Prison. Prior to joining the Department, Barrow was a police officer for the City of Glennville.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
