GDC Names Volunteers of the Year

Forsyth - The Department of Corrections named Volunteers of the Year at the Seventh Annual GDC Awards program on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth.

“The Department greatly appreciates everyone who gives their time to help us fulfill our mission,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “Their work is a valuable asset to our agency,” added Owens.

The winners and facilities are as follows:

Spencer Barron – Georgia Diagnostic & Classification Prison
Carla Beckom – Lamar Pre-Release Center
Daniel J.Keitt – Coastal State Prison
Joseph Cochran – Hays State Prison
Vidalia Medical Associates – Montgomery State Prison
Ray Whiten – Lee Arrendale State Prison
Dana and Alvin Stephens – Lamar Pre-Release Center
Ryan Powers – Hays State Prison

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by 200 guests.  Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Board of Corrections Chairman Jim Whitehead, Sr., Assistant Corrections Commissioner Fredrick J. Head, State Representative Jay Neal and special guest speaker, State Personnel Administration Commissioner Joe Doyle.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
