Forsyth- Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Stanley Williams as Warden of Smith State Prison effective March 1, 2011. The facility is located in Glennville and houses Close Security male offenders. As Warden, Williams will oversee 302 staff members and 1,596 inmates.
“Warden Williams has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the Department 26 years ago,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “I look forward to hearing great things about him and his new facility,” added Owens.
Williams joined the Department in 1985 as a Correctional Officer. He has also served as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Security Chief, Unit Manager and Deputy Warden. He most recently served as Warden at Lee State Prison. Williams attended Columbus State University and is currently enrolled at Thomas University.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
