Atlanta – Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Robert E. Jones as General Counsel and Director of Legal Services effective August 1, 2010. Mr. Jones will be filling the position vacated by Bill Amideo.
"Mr. Jones is not new to Corrections," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "His experience as a member of the Board of Corrections for the past six years will be an invaluable asset to the agency," added Owens.
Mr. Jones will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the Department’s Legal Services Division attorneys and support staff. Legal Services provides advice and guidance to agency executives and Personnel regarding Departmental operations and serves as the primary legal liaison with the Office of the Attorney General.
Mr. Jones received his Bachelors degree in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1990 and his Law degree from Mercer University in 1993. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Florida Bar. Mr. Jones was appointed by Governor Perdue in 2004 to the Board of Corrections and served as Chairman in 2009. Mr. Jones is married with three children.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
