Georgia Department of Corrections Announces Partnership

New Prison to Open in Milledgeville in 2012

Atlanta – The Department of Corrections announces a partnership with The GEO Group, Inc. (GEO) to open a new 1,500-bed prison in 2012.  The facility will be located in Milledgeville, Georgia.  Under the agreement, GEO will finance, develop and operate the $80.0 million facility.   The facility will house medium security state inmates.  This partnership provides additional bed capacity to the Department without having to foot the $80 million price of building and operating the facility and adding additional employees to the state of Georgia’s payroll.

“This partnership is great news for the Department and the Milledgeville and Baldwin County communities,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “Our mission of protecting the public will only gain strength by entering into this agreement with The GEO Group.  We look forward to working with their team and fulfilling our commitment of managing offenders, while providing a safe and secure environment for Georgians,” added Owens.

GEO is a world leader in the delivery of correctional, detention and residential treatment services to federal, state and local government agencies.  The corporation manages and/or owns 63 correctional and residential treatment facilities worldwide.  The facility in Milledgeville will bring approximately 300 permanent job positions, including 176 correctional officer positions.  Those hired to work at the prison will not be state employees.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
