Atlanta – The Department of Corrections honored Bacon Probation Detention Center with the Center of the Year Award at the Sixth Annual GDC Awards program on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth.
“Bacon Probation Detention Center does an outstanding job of providing a safe, work-oriented environment to the probationers in their charge,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “I am very proud of the work they are doing in their community.”
Bacon Probation Detention Center is a minimum-security facility, located in Alma. The center has 56 employees and houses 232 male probation detainees. The facility provides detail assignments which contract with Bacon, Jeff Davis and Appling Counties and the cities of Alma, Hazlehurst, Brunswick and Douglas. An inmate work detail is also provided to the Bullard Creek Wildlife Management area. Additionally, Bacon PDC has a skilled Special Projects detail which offers construction services all over the southeast area of the state.
Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 300 guests. Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Board of Corrections Chairman Larry Wynn, Assistant Corrections Commissioner Derrick Schofield, and special guest speaker, Brigadier General (Ret.) C. Stewart Rodeheaver. Superintendent Teresa Smith accepted the award on behalf of the facility.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.####
