GDC Names Faith-Based Contributors of the Year

Atlanta - The Department of Corrections named Faith Based Contributors of the Year at the Sixth Annual GDC Awards program on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth.

“Our work could not be accomplished without the help of our faith-based contributors,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “We thank them for the work they do in our facilities,” added Owens.

The winners and facilities are as follows:

Frank Abrahamsen (Praise and Prayer Ministry) - LaGrange Transitional Center 
Gene & Denise Carswell (World of Faith Ministries) - Macon Day Reporting Center
Christ Chapel Church - Pulaski State Prison
Gary Dyer (Caleb’s Mountain Ministries) - LaGrange Transitional Center
The First Assembly of God - Wilkes Pre Release Center
Pastor Tim Fountain (Harvest Cathedral Church) - Central State Prison
Hope Harbor Ministries - LaGrange Transitional Center
Hunter Road Baptist Church - LaGrange Transitional Center
Love In Action Community Council - Rutledge State Prison
Harry Leverett - LaGrange Transitional Center
On Fire Ministries - Johnson State Prison
Reverend James Wesley Smith, PH.D - LaGrange Transitional Center
Kurt Yeager (Kairos Ministry) - Hays State Prison

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 300 guests.  Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Board of Corrections Chairman Larry Wynn, Assistant Corrections Commissioner Derrick Schofield and special guest speaker, Brigadier General (Ret.) C. Stewart Rodeheaver.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
