GDC Names Cynthia Floyd Award Winner

Probation Officer Terra Taylor-Cochran Wins Award

Atlanta – The Department of Corrections awarded Probation Officer Terra Taylor-Cochran with the Cynthia Floyd Award at the Sixth Annual GDC Awards program on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth.

“Cochran is a creative and committed individual,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “She consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty,” added Owens. She is a Probation Officer II for the Americus Probation Office.

The award was created to honor Cynthia Floyd-Rolle for her exceptional humanitarian acts and personal sacrifice beyond the call of duty.  Ms. Floyd-Rolle served as a Probation Officer for more than 15 years, until her tragic death in 2001.

Ms. Taylor-Cochran began her career with the Department of Corrections in 2001 as a Correctional Officer at Calhoun State Prison.  She has worked as a Counselor at Calhoun State Prison and Terrell Probation Detention Center.  Since then she has been promoted to a Probation Officer and has worked at Terrell Probation Detention Center and most recently at the Americus Probation Office.  She has a Masters degree from Troy State University in Management and Leadership.  Ms. Taylor-Cochran and her husband live in Cochran, Georgia.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 300 guests. Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Board of Corrections Chairman Larry Wynn, Assistant Corrections Commissioner Derrick Schofield, and special guest speaker, Brigadier General (Ret.) C. Stewart Rodeheaver.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
