New Warden Named at Phillips State Prison

Tony Howerton Appointed

AtlantaCommissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Tony Howerton as Warden of Phillips State Prison effective July 1, 2010.  The facility is located in Buford and houses close security male inmates. As Warden, Howerton will be responsible for overseeing 348 staff members and 815 inmates.

“Warden Howerton has worked his way up through the ranks,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “We are confident in his leadership experience,” added Owens.
 
Howerton joined the Department of Corrections in 1983 as a Correctional Officer.  After several promotions, he first began serving as Warden in 1997.  Howerton most recently served as Warden at Lee Arrendale State Prison.  Prior to joining the Department, Howerton was a member of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.  He graduated from Colorado Technical University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. 

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 13,000 employees.
