State Prison

Atlanta – Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Jose Morales as Warden of Johnson State Prison effective January 1, 2010. He will oversee approximately 1,560 medium security inmates and 364 staff members.

“Morales will become the first person of Hispanic origin to oversee a Georgia correctional facility,” said Commissioner Owens. “He has performed well in all of the positions he has held and I have confidence that will continue.”

Ten years ago, Warden Morales joined the Department as a Correctional Officer at Rutledge State Prison. He previously served as a Transfer Sergeant, Public Safety Training Instructor, Training Major, Assistant Superintendent, and most recently Deputy Warden of Security of Calhoun State Prison. He is married and has a son, daughter, and three grandchildren.

The Department of Corrections is the fourth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 14,000 employees.
