New Warden Named at Coastal State Prison

AtlantaCommissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Jack Koon as Warden of Coastal State Prison effective November 1, 2009. The facility is located in Savannah and houses 1,580 close security inmates.

“Jack Koon has been a valuable asset to the Department for 17 years,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “We appreciate his dedication and look forward to hearing great things from Coastal State Prison.”

Koon joined the Department in 1992 as a Counselor at Men’s State Prison.  Since then, he served as Senior Counselor, Deputy Warden of Administration at Rivers SP, Regional Business Manager, Superintendent at Lagrange Transitional Center, Field Operations Manager for Transitional, Diversion and Pre-release Centers and most recently Transitional Center Coordinator.   

Koon has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Georgia College and State University and a Masters degree in Business Administration from National University in Sacramento, California.  He also served in the U.S. Army as a Captain.   

The Department of Corrections is the fourth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 14,000 employees.
