Change of Responsibility Ceremony Held at Wilcox State Prison

Atlanta – Department of Corrections’ staff and local dignitaries attended a Change of Responsibility ceremony on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.  During the ceremony, Warden Alan Carter received responsibility for Wilcox State Prison in Abbeville, Georgia.  Warden Carter will oversee 1,862 inmates and 261 staff members.

“Warden Carter has served the Department in a variety of positions over the years,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “I am proud to give him responsibility of Wilcox State Prison and expect to hear great things about him and his facility.”

Warden Carter most recently served as Superintendent at Southwest Probation Detention Center in Moultrie, Georgia.  He has also served as Correctional Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Deputy Warden of Security, Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment and Warden at Valdosta State Prison.  Warden Carter is married with two children.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
