Change of Responsibility Ceremony Held at Telfair State Prison

Helena - Department of Corrections’ staff and local dignitaries attended a Change of Responsibility Ceremony on Tuesday, July 14, 2009. During the ceremony, Warden Donald Barrow received responsibility for Telfair State Prison. Telfair State Prison is located in Helena, Georgia. The facility houses close security, male offenders.

“Warden Barrow has shown that he is a great leader and is dedicated to the Department’s mission in running safe and secure facilities,” said Commissioner Brian Owens. “He serves as a role model for all staff at Telfair State Prison.”

Warden Barrow joined the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1986 as a Correctional Officer at Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, Ga. Warden Barrow advanced through the ranks, holding various positions including Sergeant, Lieutenant, Chief of Security, Deputy Warden of Security, and most recently as Warden of Wilcox State Prison. At Telfair State Prison, he will oversee 1,113 inmates and 269 staff members.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 14,000 employees.
