GDC Honors Clayton County Prison

Atlanta – The Department of Corrections honored Clayton County Prison as County Facility of the Year at the Fifth Annual GDC Awards program on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 on the historic Tift College Campus in Forsyth. 

“The staff at Clayton County Prison does an excellent job of providing inmates with the skills they need to become a productive member of society,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “This facility serves as a great example to others.”

The Clayton County Prison, located in Lovejoy, is a medium-security facility, with 51 staff members and 226 inmates.  The prison received the same award in 1993.   

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
