GDC Names Employee of the Year

Atlanta – The Department of Corrections honored Richard Cobb as Employee of the Year at the Fifth Annual GDC Awards program on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 on the historic Tift College Campus in Forsyth.

“Richard is a true representative of the type of individual we want working for the Department,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “He is consistently noted for his professionalism and it is an honor to give him this award.”

Cobb began his career with the Department 17 years ago as a Correctional Officer.  Currently, he serves as Unit Manager at the Wilkes Pre-Release Center.  He is known for encouraging staff to give back to the community.  He also created an award that honors inmates who make a difference.  During 2008, Cobb had an outstanding number of inmate education completions at the Center:  11 GED diplomas (100% passing rate), 63 Customer Service and Technology Certificates and 29 On-the-Job Training Certificates.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
