New Chief Probation Officer Named For Gwinnett Judicial Circuit

Atlanta – Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Sharon Cashin as the new Chief Probation Officer for the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit effective May 16, 2009.  Chief Cashin will be responsible for the oversight of 52 staff members and the supervision of all felony probationers in the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit.

“Sharon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Gwinnett Judicial Circuit,” said Commissioner Owens.  “I have full confidence in her ability to serve the Department in her new leadership role.”

Cashin began her career with the Department in 1984 as a Probation Officer in the Coweta Judicial Circuit.  She transferred to the Athens Probation Office in 1986, where she worked on the Court team and later supervised a field caseload.  Cashin also worked as a training officer for the circuit.  In 2008, Cashin became the first Probation Officer assigned to the Athens Day Reporting Center when it opened in January.  She was later promoted to Center Administrator.  Cashin is a 1982 graduate of North Georgia College and University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
