Chester – Department of Corrections’ staff attended a Change of Responsibility Ceremony on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. During the ceremony, Warden Hugh A. Smith received responsibility for Dodge State Prison.
“Warden Smith began his career with Corrections in 1982,” said Commissioner James E. Donald. “He has worked his way through the ranks, starting as a Store Manager and eventually serving as Warden. Today I am proud to give him responsibility of Dodge State Prison.”
Warden Smith was first promoted to Warden at Montgomery State Prison in Mount Vernon, Georgia in 1996. He has since held the position at four other facilities. He was most recently Warden at Hays State Prison in Trion, Georgia.
Dodge State Prison is located in Chester, Georgia. Its mission is to provide work and rehabilitation programs for general population offenders.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
