Atlanta – Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald announced the appointment of Mike Kraft as the new Chief Probation Officer of the Western Judicial Circuit, effective January 4, 2008.
“I have complete confidence in the leadership abilities of Mike Kraft,” said Commissioner James E. Donald. “His knowledge and professionalism have proved invaluable and will serve him well at the Athens Probation Office.”
Kraft began his career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1990 as a Probation Officer. He has since served as Probation Officer II, Intensive Probation Officer, Specialized Probation Officer, Probation Officer III, and recently, the Chief Probation Officer in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit. As the newly appointed Chief of the Western Judicial Circuit, Kraft will supervise the staff at both the Athens Probation Office and the new Athens Day Reporting Center.
Kraft is a 1989 graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Kraft also serves as a firearms instructor, POST instructor and is the First Vice President of the Georgia Probation Association. He is a member of the Tuckston Methodist church in Athens, Georgia, where he, his wife Maureen and their two children reside.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and 140,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
