Atlanta – Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald announced the appointment of Shirley A. Griggs as the new Coordinating Chief Probation Officer of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit, effective January 4, 2008.
“Shirley Griggs’ wide range of experience is a valuable asset to the Atlanta Judicial Circuit,” said Commissioner James E. Donald. “We look forward to her leadership as she assumes her new duties.”
Griggs began her career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 1984 as a Probation Aide. She has since served as Probation Officer I and II, Intensive Probation Officer, Probation Officer III, and recently, the Chief Probation Officer in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit. As the newly appointed Coordinating Chief of the Atlanta Judicial Circuit, Griggs will supervise staff at five Atlanta Probation Offices.
A native of Dacula, Griggs graduated from American InterContinental University with a BBA Degree. She completed the Management Development Training Program in 1990 and the Certified Public Managers Program in 1995. She also completed the Corrections Leadership Institute in 1995. Griggs and her husband Eddie have two adult sons and reside in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and 140,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 15,000 employees.
